Tim Schoen Receives Bisnow Life Sciences Icon & Influencer Award

Tim Schoen, CEO of BioMed Realty, the largest private operator of life science real estate, received the Bisnow Life Sciences Icon & Influencer Award on September 10 at the International Life Sciences & Biotech Conference in San Diego. The recognition is presented annually to individuals whose leadership and vision have left an enduring mark on the life sciences real estate industry.

Since 2016, Schoen has led BioMed Realty through a period of significant growth and transformation. Under his leadership, the company’s portfolio has expanded to more than 17 million square feet across six core markets, including the Bay Area, Boston/Cambridge, Boulder, San Diego, Seattle and Cambridge, UK.

This new accolade joins a list of distinctions for Schoen, including Dealmaker of the Year (San Francisco Business Times, 2020) and San Diego Leader of Influence (San Diego Business Journal, 2023). However, his impact to the life science community reaches far beyond real estate. He serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Trustees of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and is Finance Chair, as well as chairing the Conquering Cancer Advisory Committee for the institute. He also sits on the Board of Directors for CoreGiving, a nonprofit addressing childhood hunger.

“We are thrilled to honor Tim, whose steady leadership, innovative thinking and deep commitment to advancing human health have positioned BioMed Realty as one of the most respected organizations in life sciences real estate,” said Gregg Mayer, Bisnow CEO. “His ability to lead through market cycles while continuing to invest in people, partnerships and purpose is exactly the kind of influence this award is meant to celebrate.”

As part of the Bisnow conference in San Diego, Schoen also joined Joe Panetta, Biocom California President Emeritus, for a fireside chat focused on how the life science industry continues to adapt and thrive amid rapid technological change, shifting global dynamics and progressing healthcare demands.

“As real estate providers to the life science and technology industries, we have a responsibility to provide spaces that cultivate innovation and support essential pillars of the global research ecosystem,” Schoen said. “With the infrastructure in place, we help accelerate innovation by delivering mission critical facilities to the most advanced scientific teams each day.”
